Rating demonstrates excellent progress in reducing environmental impacts by applying best practices in energy and environmental efficiency
La Crosse, Wis., July 26, 2012 – Ingersoll Rand (NYSE:IR), a world leader in creating and sustaining safe, comfortable and efficient environments, announced that the company’s Reuben Trane Building in La Crosse, Wis. has earned two Green Globes® from the Green Building Initiative (GBI).
The GBI is a nonprofit organization and an American National Standards Institute ANSI accredited standards developer dedicated to accelerating the adoption of building practices that result in energy-efficient, healthier and environmentally sustainable buildings. A rating of two Green Globes is defined as: demonstrating excellent progress in reducing environmental impacts by applying best practices in energy and environmental efficiency.
Built in the mid-1960s, the four-story, 195,000 sq. foot Ingersoll Rand-owned building is home to about 700 employees and includes accounting, financial and logistical services for the Trane business.
The GBI assessment and rating tools were ideal for an older building, where retrofits must be cost-effective in addition to environmentally progressive. These ratings provide for recent and ongoing renovations and upgrades that contribute to resource conservation, energy efficiency and other sustainability goals.
The facility received two Green Globes from the GBI after completing many sustainability projects, with more in process, and fulfilling rigorous requirements and documentation. The GBI reviews six areas: energy, water, resources, emissions, indoor environment, and environmental management service (EMS).
The final rating for the Reuben Trane Building was on par with or better than other buildings of the same age that have applied for Green Globes certification. Following are two of the many areas where specific savings were achieved:

Installing hand dryers is saving $30,000 in paper towel purchases and keeps nine tons of paper from the waste stream, annually.

Energy-efficient retrofits of parking lot lighting are saving $6,000 per year while increasing security lighting.
“The Green Globes certification further validates that operating more sustainably makes smart business sense, along with being good for the well-being of our employees and the local La Crosse community,” said Dave Peterson, Trane facility manager.
By committing to sustainability as part of continuous improvement, this Trane team is proving that it’s feasible, practical, and affordable to bring an older building closer to modern standards for environmental responsibility. Completed, ongoing and planned projects at this facility contribute to the Ingersoll Rand goal of reducing energy use by 25 percent by 2019 as part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Save Energy Now Leader program.
