Ingersoll Rand Named to 2011 Dow Jones Sustainability World Index and North America Index

Company recognized for its worldwide environmental leadership

Swords, Ireland, September 9, 2011Ingersoll Rand (NYSE:IR), a world leader in creating and sustaining safe, comfortable and efficient environments, was selected for the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index and North America Index in recognition of the company’s economic, environmental and social performance. Inclusion on this year’s World Index is a first for the company.

Launched in 1999, the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices are the first global indices tracking the financial performance of the leading, sustainability-driven companies worldwide.

Ingersoll Rand has set and publicly announced aggressive sustainability goals. For example, the company plans to reduce its rate of energy use by 25 percent by 2019.

In 2010, Ingersoll Rand announced the creation of the Center for Energy Efficiency & Sustainability, which is dedicated to integrating internal and external best practices for the long-term use of energy and other resources with a unique focus on product innovation and external engagement.

“The Center is the focal point for taking environmental expertise to our customers and rolling it out across our own operations,” said John Conover, president of Security Technologies and chairman of the sustainability strategy council for Ingersoll Rand. “Being a sustainable company will also make us a better company.”

Ingersoll Rand has partnered with the U.S. Department of Energy on its Save Energy Now program and also joined the Environmental Protection Agency’s Climate Leaders program.

This year, Ingersoll Rand combined its Annual and Sustainability Report to underscore the importance that sustainability brings in its business strategy. The report highlights the company’s efforts and achievements to become a more sustainable company and offer innovative products and services to help customers meet their sustainability goals. The Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index tracks the performance of the top 20 percent of the 600 largest companies from Canada and the United States in the Dow Jones Global Total Stock Market Index (DJGTSM) that lead the field in terms of sustainability.

To be selected for the index, companies must undergo a thorough analysis of corporate economic, environmental and social performance, assessing issues, such as corporate governance, risk management, customer relationship management, product stewardship, supply chain standards and human resource practices. Dow Jones and Zurich-based Sustainable Asset Management Group reviews the index annually.
